The top four ways to reduce the impact of container rain

There are multiple ways in which moisture can enter containers and damage cargo. But there also practical steps to take that can minimize the problem. Here’s our guide to how shippers can control condensation within containers.

1. Choice of pallets

Wooden pallets absorb moisture. It has been estimated that a standard pallet can absorb up to 20 liters of water. If new pallets made with fresh, wet lumber are used, they can contribute significantly to moisture content within a container. As can any pallets that have been stored in wet conditions. Wooden pallets should always be dried before loading (or stored in an as dry as possible environment) and plastic pallets considered as an alternative.

2. Insulation

By keeping contents warmer than the dew point, an insulated container prevents the extreme temperature differences that lead to condensation. It will significantly decrease the build up of moisture and risk of container rain.

3. Ventilation

Improving ventilation equalizes the temperature inside and outside a container, drawing out moist air and allowing air of ambient temperature to circulate. This reduces moisture and condensation.

4. Desiccants

These products absorb moisture content in the air, reducing the dew point inside a container. They prevent moisture damage and control mold growth and corrosion. Desiccants are available in a variety of forms, bags, blankets, pads and sachets, used as required to meet the needs of each specific load.
